What does it look and feel like to protect oneself from the need to be protected? My paintings utilize abstraction as an exploration of what it means to expel something corporeal and visceral — to break through a perceived boundary. I start with a thin acrylic wash on unprimed canvas, followed by a charcoal line drawing, loosely based on the folds and volume of a couture gown. These forms of fashion captivate me in the way they explode into space and simultaneously seem to swallow their ultra feminized substrate. The drawing operates as a visual map of boundaries to be both observed and violated. In my paintings, movement is a source of power called on to rupture the fabric of constraint. Color is an indicator of strength — of joyful resistance. I pour and intuitively guide layers of acrylic paint, diluted to varying levels of viscosity, across canvas rolled out on the floor, until a visceral abstraction emerges.
